Foreigners were perceived by many as superior. Foreign currency could buy many things not generally available to Russians. With shortage of goods in the country most imports were highly priced. As the result, a culture has been created where dating foreigners was more popular than dating locals. Isn't it where this all comes from? Russian women wanting to marry foreign men?
