Upcoming Cultural Events in Moscow

The holiday season is upon us and with that comes a slew of performances in the arts. Even after the season winds down, cultural nightlife in Moscow will continue after the new year begins, providing plenty of social opportunities for meeting pretty Russian women or taking single women on dates.

One of the first festivals of the year is called Homecoming, featuring a number of young Russian musicians who have spent time away from their home countries, due to their studies or performance schedules abroad. In 2007, the 10th anniversary of Homecoming will present 5 performances of new chamber music that have not been heard in Moscow.

Epiphany Week at Novaya Opera begins January 19th at Novaya Opera Theater. Presenting a program designed to honor their founder, Yevgeny Kolobov, the festival features Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 (the “Resurrection Symphony”), conducted by the theater’s musical director, Eri Klas and a concert production of Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s opera “Iolanta”.

Speaking of opera, January also brings two concert performances a concert performance of the opera “Manon Lescaut,” which was Giacomo Puccini’s first operatic success and relatively unknown inside of Russia. It’s being conducted by conductor Teodor Curentzis of the Novosibirsk Theater of Opera and Ballet. Curentzis is gaining quite a reputation with his recent productions of Mozart and Rossini.

There’s nothing like a night out at the symphony to impress the pretty Russian ladies. In January the Svetlanov State Symphony Orchestra will play Sergei Prokofiev’s cantata arranged from music he wrote for the classic film, “Ivan the Terrible.” It will be conducted by Yury Temirkanov, the music director of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic. A highlight of the end of the month will be a rare Moscow performance of Joseph Haydn’s “The Creation,” conducted by Alexander Rudin.
