Unique Dating Opportunity – Midnight Mass
If you are looking for a unique event to take a date on Sunday night in St. Petersburg, St. Catherine’s Roman Catholic Church is having a Christmas midnight mass. This is a first for the church as they have usually held the mass earlier in the evening to accommodate parish members who would usually have to work the following day. December 25th is not an official holiday in Russia because in the Orthodox Church, Christmas falls on January 7th.
The Church of St. Catherine is located on Nevsky Prospekt not too far from the Grand Hotel Europe. The senior priest at the church, Father Maciej Rusiecki, says that many foreigners would come to the church expecting a mass at that time and miss it because they were holding it at 7 p.m. instead.
The church is home to about 500 members who include Russian women and men, mostly of Polish, Byelorussian and Lithuanian decent and a number of foreigners who are in the St. Petersburg area. The first Roman Catholic Church in Russia, The Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria was built in 1783. It fell out of use during the Soviet era and its interior destroyed by fire in 1984.
