St. Petersburg Women and Men Play Ultimate Frisbee
There’s a new sport in St. Petersburg that Russian women and men are playing together and it’s called Ultimate Frisbee. Ultimate, a sport that borrows from both soccer and American football and uses a Frisbee as the way to score, is a non-contact sport that provides a strenuous cardio workout. It attracts both men and women to play on co-ed 7 player teams in a friendly environment in cites like St Petersburg, Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod and Velikv Novgorod.
The game is played in local parks in St. Petersburg. You’ll see teams with names like Dogma, JuPiter and Flying Steps and hear terms like layout, Huck and Hammer. Out of the almost 20 teams throughout Russia, 5 teams are in St. Petersburg. Those consist of four open teams that are mixed men and women and one women’s team. There are approximately 150 players in the city alone.
Competition takes the local teams on many a journey through Northwest Russia and the Baltic States as well as Europe to attend championships. The Russian Women’s team will be participating in England to compete in the European Championships.
The sport is comprised of participates of wide ranging athletic background, from the beginner to those that play two or three times a week. It’s the newest way to meet your peers and get fit at the same time.
