St Petersburg Cancels -Whistler in Russia- Exhibition
After a dispute with the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow and the British Council, the State Russian Museum has cancelled the “Whistler in Russia” show which was scheduled for February. St Petersburg women and men will now miss the opportunity to see the works of the great artist who spent his childhood in Russia.
The exhibition, which features works by Whistler and paintings by Russian artists, opened in Russia on December 8. The conflict started when the State Russian Museum refused to loan paintings to the Moscow show. Then the St Petersburg curators wanted to use all the works by Whistler included in the Moscow show, with a different selection of works by Russian artists. There were also concerns about the cost of the show and conflicts with Tretyakov staff.
All of these issues led the institution to withdraw its bid to host the exhibition. This is a shame, especially for the St Petersburg women and men that are art lovers and were looking forward to the show. The State Russian Museum exhibition would have been the first showing of Whistler’s work in the city where he lived from ages 9 to 14.
