Russia is off to a strong start in the Ice Hockey World Championships currently being held in Moscow much to the joy of Russian women and men hockey fans.

In preliminary round matches the Russians rolled over Denmark 9-1 and Ukraine 8-1 before being tested in a tough match against Finland. In that match, Russia took a 4-1 lead into the third quarter of the game only to have the Fins come back and rally to pull within one goal before Petr Schastlivyy scored halfway through the third quarter to give the Russians a 5-3 lead. Finland managed to score one more goal but they were unable to close the gap, giving the Russians the victory.

The Russians then defeated Italy by a score of 3-0 to move into the championship playoffs in their qualifying Group E match. They had a tough start though as Italian goalie Jason Muzzatti was in complete control of Italy’s net. Ilya Kovalchuk scored the open goal for the Russians at the 34 minute mark giving his team a 1-0 lead and they never looked back.

The Russians continue to try to bring home the World Championship with a match against Switzerland on Sunday. Russia is currently second in the Group E rankings behind Sweden.
