Russian Women Victorious at World Athletic Championships

The Russian runner Yekaterina Volkova was the winner of the women’s 3,000 meter steeplechase event Monday at the World Athletic Championships. She was the 2nd place finisher in 2005 and won this year with a time of nine minutes and 6.57 seconds – a new World Championships record.

Fellow Russian, Tatyana Petrova got second with a time of 9 minutes, 9.19 seconds while Eunice Jepkorir from Kenya finished third in 9 minutes, 20.09 seconds.

The current World record holder in the women’s 3,000 meter steeplechase, Russian Gulnara Samitova-Galkina, came in 7th with a time of nine minutes 30.24 seconds, well off her 2004 record setting mark of nine minutes, 1.59 seconds.

Not only is Volkova a world champion runner, she is also a dedicated Russian wife and mother. She sad she won the race for her son Daniel, who is three years old. She hopes to set the world record in the event soon.

It was just a couple of years ago that this event became an official one at the World Championships. The winner of the 2005 3000m steeplechase, Dorcus Inzkuru from Uganda, did not enter the event this year.
