Russian Woman Wins Honolulu Marathon
Russian woman Lyubov Denisova won the Honolulu Marathon this weekend with an official time of 2 hours, 27 minutes and 19 seconds. Denisova’s victory marks the sixth time in the past seven years that Russian women have won the event. It is also the third year in a row that a Russian woman has won the event.
Two Russian women also placed well in the event. Alevtina Biktimirova, 24, finished in second place with a time of 2:29:42 and defending champion Olesya Nurgaliev, 30, came in fourth with a time of 2:36:02.
Denisova set a new course record in the women’s race by topping fellow Russian Lyubov Morgunova’s 2004 time by 14 seconds. Morgunova was not able to compete this year because of an injury. Denisova was originally not invited to the event and used that as motivation to win. She won $67,000 in money and bonuses.
Lyubov Denisova also won the 2005 Los Angeles Marathon. In addition, she has also placed third in the 2004 New York City Marathon, fifth in 2003 and was the runner-up in 2002. In her career she has placed first at the Grandma’s Marathon, the Long Beach Marathon, and the Macau Marathon. She was a runner-up at the 2003 Boston Marathon and has also previously won the Los Angeles Marathon in 2002. Not only is Denisova a successful marathon runner, she is also married and the mother of a daughter, Nastya.
