Russian Woman Tennis Player Maria Sharapova Upset in Aussie Open
The top seeded and beautiful Russian woman tennis player Maria Sharapova was upset in the Australian Open this weekend by American player Serena Williams. The match was only two sets, which Serena won 6-1 and 6-2.
Sharapova had a 13 match winning streak going into the final. Williams is the second unseeded player to win the Australian Open in the Open era.
Sharapova was quoted as saying that “You can never under estimate her as a performer.” She knew what Williams was capable of. Williams drew upon the memory of her slain sister for motivation for the win.
Sharapova beat Kim Clijsters 6-4 and 6-2 to reach the finals. She defeated fellow Russian Anna Chakvetadze 7-6 and 7-5 in the quarterfinals. To get to the quarterfinals, she defeated another Russian woman, Vera Zvonareva 7-5, 6-4 and Italian Tathiana Garbin 6-3, 61.
She was born in 1987 in Nyagan, Russia. Some of the highlights of her career include being the first Russian to win the women’s singles title at Wimbledon as well as being the third-youngest champion there. She earned her first number one ranking in 2005.
