Russian Four-Man Bobsled Team Takes World Cup Lead
Russia’s four-man bobsled team is on top of the World Cup standings after a victory Sunday. Driver Yevgeny Popov led the team to victory at Mount Van Hoevenberg.
The Russian 1 team of Popov, Dmitry Stepushkin, Roman Orechnikov and Dmitry Trunenkov finished the race in 1 minute and 51.51 seconds. They were followed by the Latvia 1 team, led by Janis Minis coming in at 1 minute and 51.99 seconds. Italy 1 finished third in 1 minute and 52.10 seconds.
The Russian team also won last week at Park City, Utah in the four-man World Cup race. At Mount Van Hoevenberg, 16 sleds started the race, but only 15 finished due to a crash by the defending Lake Placid four man champion, Alexander Zoubkov.
New Sports Complex Planned for Moscow
An all-season sports complex is in the planning stages according to Moscow officials. The complex will be located in southern Moscow on Elektrolitny Proyezd along the Koylovka River. It will be conveniently located near the Nagornaya metro station.
The facility is expected to open in 2012 and will play host to up to 400,000 people a year. It will feature facilities for sports and entertainment; wellness and cultural activities and include administrative offices also. Facilities for the handicapped are also planned. Not only will the new sports complex be a good place to improve your physical fitness, it will also be a social opportunity for single Russian women and men to meet.
