Russian Foreign Minister Speaks Out About United States And Iran

The foreign minister of Russia, Sergey Lavrov, has issued a warning to Washington about using force against Iran while being critical of the United States’ handling of other global crises. Specifically, he was addressing the United States Vice President Dick Cheney comments that all options would be considered in stopping Tehran from becoming a nuclear power.

Russia has spoken out against the use of force against Iran numerous times. They supported a U.N. Security Council resolution that put limited sanctions against Iran because of its refusal to halt its uranium enrichment program. Iran has continued to ignore the U.N. deadline and the U.S. is accusing them of secretly trying to build nuclear weapons.

Representatives met Monday in London to discuss new ways to pressure Iran into stopping its enrichment program including restrictions on trade and arms. Lavrov says that the talks were deadlocked because of the unwillingness to compromise by both Iran and the United States.

Lavrov also lashed out at Washington for its unilateralist approach to global issues, adding that Putin’s harsh comments last month towards the U.S. were representative of how many countries feel, but are afraid to express.В He commented that Russia is able to speak about these issues because of the country’s resurgence after the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union.
