Russian Chess Champion Weds In Private Marriage
Vladimir Kramnik and the French journalist Marie-Laure Germon got married in a private ceremony on December 31st, 2006. Afterwards the couple went to Switzerland for a six-day holiday before Kramnik went to Wijk aan Zee for a chess tournament.
The two met in France two years ago when she requested an interview from him. He called her afterwards and they began dating. Kramnik’s mother, who is from the Ukraine met Marie-Laure after a year and presented her with a customary embroidered towel, called a rushnik, which is traditionally presented to a daughter-in-law and is a Ukraine marriage tradition. Kramnik had to remind her that one year is too early to marry in the West and that people usually waited two years to get married.
The marriage took place in Kramnik’s Paris apartment with about 40 relative and close friends present as they went to the registration office for the civil ceremony. They also plan a separate ceremony at the Church of Alexander Nevski in Paris in February. The couple will live in Paris and possibly start a family, as Marie has said that she wants a minimum of three children.
His family was always concerned that he would not get married because he was always more interested in chess than anything.
