Russia Under High Alert
Authorities in Russia have put security forces on high alert because of a threat of a terrorist attack based on information from foreign officials. The information is currently being investigated.
The threat was towards the public transportation system, specifically on ground transportation and the Metro. The chief of the Federal Security Service, Nikolai Patrushev put anti-terror forces on high alert along with increased security measures to try to prevent any attack from occurring.
Not much information has been made available as to the source of the information or what city or cities in Russia could be targets. Moscow officials have increased the number of bomb-sniffing dogs in the subway system, according to RIA-Novosti.
Russians have been urged to be careful and to stay alert, while cooperating with law officers. The statement provided by the government said that the warning was passed on to the Federal Operative Headquarters, which is an anti-terror fighting organization created by President Putin.
There have been several bombings on the Moscow subway system and on ground transportation in the past 12 years because of conflicts with Chechnya, which is largely Muslim. Rebels from that area have been claiming responsibility or been blamed for most of those attacks.
