Russia: No War in Outer Space
The defense minister of Russia, Sergei Ivanov, has reiterated that Russia is completely opposed to the militarization of outer space. This is in response to the recent missile test that China performed last month, which destroyed a Chinese satellite.
He admitted that while China was not the first country that had used missiles in outer space, both the United States and Russia have looked at the issue as one of self-defense and not to intimidate other countries. It is one thing to use outer space for defense purposes and security, but to actually place weapon there is something the Russian government is opposed to.
On January 11th China performed the ballistic missile launch and revealed the results of it two weeks later. This caused an international outcry and debate among countries about China’s ambitions from a military standpoint.
The United States may counter with space-based interceptor missiles, something that Russia and other countries are also opposed to. Chinese leadership has denied that they are looking to start an arms war in space. In the meantime, Russian women and men may wonder if the old cold war will rejuvenate itself into star wars.
