Russia Increasing Nuclear Business
Russia is set to develop a nuclear Gazprom now that the Parliament has passed a Bill that will consolidate all of the country’s nuclear companies into a single entity called Atomprom, which will be state owned. The companies included are those that do nuclear fuel production and export.
The move was made so that Russia can get involved in the atomic energy market, which is making a comeback in the world economy. By the creation of Atomprom, Russia will be able to compete on an international level with Toshiba and Siemens in terms of exporting nuclear fuel and power plants to new markets.
Russia already offers nuclear power stations at a lower rate than its Western competition. India has bought two already and a deal is in the works to provide four more new facilities. In addition, there are bids in place in China and Egypt to build nuclear reactors.
It is thought that will also improve monitoring of the nuclear material in Russia. On the negative side, there may be some conflict with the United States because of nuclear exports to Iran. The Kremlin is also considering providing five more reactors in Iran. Other plans include hosting dumps that will store spent nuclear fuel from emerging countries in the market which could bring an estimated $4 billion in profit.
