Russia Approves of Amended UN Iran Resolution
Changes made in a draft United Nations resolution against Iran and its developing nuclear program have been praised by Sergei Larov, the foreign minister of Russia. He was happy to see that proposals Russia made for change in the original resolution had been taken under advisement and included in the newest version, according to RIA Novosti.
The five Security Council permanent members, the United States, China, France, Britain and Russia, and Germany met Monday to look over and discuss the revised resolution which targets Iran for failing to cease its uranium enrichment program.
Both Russia and China have voiced their disapproval of what they see as measures that are too harsh on Iran. The most recent version of the resolution proposes trade and travel restrictions. Both countries feel the travel ban is restrictive and that the trade restrictions should be carefully worded as to not prohibit legal trade and activities.
Russia was concerned about plans for construction of a reactor they are building in the City of Bushehr in southwest Iran. They are also providing fuel supplies to the light-water reactor. The newest version of the draft resolution will not affect those plans, but will provide for sanctions against Iran in regards to its uranium enrichment program. Officials in Moscow are also concerned about this aspect of the Iranian nuclear energy program and hoping to get Iran to come clean about their motives in this area.
