Performance Features Opera Based On Historic Russian Bride Tale

Monday evening is a “don’t miss” performance of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s opera “The Tsar’s Bride in Moscow. Conducted by Vladimir Fedoseyev, the semi-staged performance will feature the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra and Moscow State Chamber Choir along with a number of outstanding soloists.

The cast of Monday’s production includes Bulgarian baritone Vladimir Stoyanov in the role of Gryaznoy and Olga Borodina, considered by many to be an outstanding the queen Russian mezzo-sopranos. The rest of the cast is rounded out by artists from Ukraine, Austria, and Lithuania. Some local opera company members are also getting a chance to perform.

Staging is being taken care of by the Macedonian director Ivan Popovski who is best known in Russia for staging “The Tsar’s Bride” at the Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Center three years ago and his version of Sergei Prokofiev’s “War and Peace” which appeared last season at the Bolshoi and has been nominated for an award at the 2007 Golden Mask Festival.

The tragic tale of “The Tsar’s Bride” is based on Ivan the Terrible’s third wife, Marfa and is considered to be Rimsky-Korsakov’s finest operatic work. You can see the performance Monday February 18th at 7 pm at the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall, located at 4/31 Triumfalnaya Ploshchad. Metro Mayakovskaya.
