SkyExpress, Russia’s first discount airline had its first flight on January 29th and will make it easier to fly within the world’s largest country. The Boeing-737 airplanes have a bright, multi-colored logo. The first flight went from Moscow to the Black Sea city of Sochi and plans are to have flights to 11 Russian cities ranging 500-1,800 miles of Moscow.

Prices are affordable at $18.82, or 500 rubles, one-way with advance booking. Aeroflot offers advance tickets to Sochi starting at $105.90. Many people initially though the prices were a joke because they were so cheap.

The hopes are that if SkyExpress is a success, than other Russian airlines will have to lower prices to compete in the domestic flight market. The goal of SkyExpress is to make affordable air travel a reality for many Russians.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is one foreign investor who has taken an interest in the new airline by buying a 20 percent equity in the airline. Additional shareholders include Russia’s number 3 airline KrasAir, two investment funds and a number of private investors. There is no shareholder with a majority stake.

Two of the reasons for the decline of air travel in Russia include cost and safety. The main goal of SkyExpress’s for this year is to obtain an international safety certification.

Now when men travel to meet their beautiful Russian brides, there will be a low cost option available to them for flying within the country.
