Moscow Women and Men Get Chance to See New Eugene Onegin Production

Five years after the Tchaikovsky opera “Eugene Onegin” was removed from the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Musical Theater’s repertoire, it is back with a new, intimate staging done by Alexander Titel.

The opera was originally written as a small scale work; however, as the years progressed the production became more large scale cumulating in the Bolshoi version which ran from 1944 to 1990. The latest versions of the production have returned to the original intent of the composer, both with this production and the updated version that returned to the Bolshoi last September.

The set features four pairs of columns that are set at a steep angle across the stage with a plain pastel background. The columns are white halfway around and black the other half and they revolve around to reveal one color or the other to highlight the action. There is also a set of metal bridges that come down and are used for acting space, or a coat rack and shield in a ball scene.

The opera so far is being performed excellently by both the orchestra and cast. The second performance in May will feature the soprano, Olga Guryakova, singing Tatyana, which she is world renown for.

Eugene Onegin will be playing this plays Thursday and on May 20th at 7 p.m. The Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Musical Theater is located at 17 Bolshaya Dmitrovka. It’s a great chance for Russian women and men to see this uniquely Russian opera.
