Soon it will be much easier for Russian women and men as well as travelers to access WiFi in selected airports in Russia. Russia’s number two mobile telecom company, VimpelCom, will be installing wireless Internet access in 12 Russian airports starting August 1st.
The airports that will have hotspots are the international terminal at Sheremetyevo, the Pulkovo airport in St. Petersburg and airports located in Perm and Nizhny Novgorod. Domodedovo already has access which goes for 243 rubles an hour ($9.50).
Mobile TeleSystems has hotspots in locations around the country. There are 300 hotspots in the Moscow area, Sochi, St. Petersburg and Izhevsk. The latest upgrade in service includes an option to get a username and password via SMS message. His will replace the scratch card system that was used before.
The WiFi side of the business is not a revenue generating one according to industry spokespersons. Most companies provide the service to create visibility for their products and to help develop client loyalty.
Other company that provides WiFi service in Russia is Golden Telecom, which is partially owned by a subsidiary of Alfa Group, Altimo. They just launched the largest WiFi network in the world by setting up 7,500 nodes across Mega shopping centers across the country.
