More Twists in the Poisoned Russian Spy Case
The BBC has reported that a former business associate of the poisoned Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko claims that he was murdered because he had put together an eight-page document on a powerful Russian business man.
According to Yuri Shvets, an ex-spy currently based in the United States, Litvinenko was working for Western based companies, providing them with information about Russian clients they were considering working with on investment deals in Russia and other areas of the former Soviet Union. There were five individuals that Litvinenko was compiling information on.
One of those individuals was a high ranking member of the Putin administration. Shvets contends that Litvinenko had presented the report to Andrei Lugovoi in order to show him what sort of information should be reported to Western clients in those types of dossiers. Shvets believes that Lugovoi in turn told the Russian figure about the report and shortly thereafter, Litvinenko fell ill with radiation poisoning.
The British company that Litvinenko had prepared the report for ended up pulling out of a deal worth millions. Shvets says that he spoke to Litvinenko about who had poisoned him and he initially blamed the Italian Mario Scaramella. He eventually admitted that he had met with Lugovoi and some other Russians and that he suspected they could possibly be responsible.
