Hopman Cup Tennis Action
In Russian women and men’s tennis news, the mixed doubles team of Nadia Petrova and Dmitry Tursunov defeated the United States team of Ashley Harkleroad and Mardy Fish in the Hopman Cup.
The singles matches had been split with Petrova defeating Harkleroad 6-3, 6-0 and Fish beating Tursunov 6-1, 6-4. Both teams had lost their opening rounds and only the winner of this round would advance to the final Friday.
In the doubles match, the Russians were able to recover from a breakdown during the second set to win 63, 7-5. The highlight of the match was a blind crosscourt shot from Tursunov that he fired over his left shoulder to win the match as he ran off the court.
Both Russian players had been upset in matches during Cup action. Petrova, ranked 6th in the world, had been beaten by a local player, Alicia Molik. Tursunov was upset by Fish in his singles match and was also defeated by Mark Philippoussis in his first match of the Cup on Saturday. Tursunov is ranked 22nd in the world.
Hopman Cup action resumes Thursday with the US taking on Australia and Russia playing against France to determine which team will move on to the finals.
