Governor’s Cup in Samara Features Women and Men Athletes
The 13th annual Governor’s Cup was held in Samara this past weekend, a Russian city on the Volga River. There were 100 athletes representing 12 countries competing in the track and field events.
Cuba had a strong showing in the male events, winning the top two spots in the triple jump and the Long Jump. In the women’s 60m, Cuban Virgen Benavides edged out Russian Marina Kislova by 1/100th of a second. The men’s 60m was won by a Canadian.
In the women’s Long Jump, an injured Tatyana Lebedeva fought off Pole Malgorzata Trybanska after the first round to continue her winning ways in the event. She won the competition last weekend at the Russian Winter meeting and had initially said she would not compete this weekend. Ukrainian Oksana Zubkovska came in third.
The three women jumpers that train under coach Vyacheslav Dogonkin performed well with Lebedeva winning, Olga Rubleva coming in at 4th and Oksana Udmurtova finishing 5th. In the women’s Triple Jump Udmurtova finished second to World and European championships medalist Anna Pyatykh
Samara resident Valentin Kruglyakov won the 400m, which the crowd particularly enjoyed.
