Dating and Marriage Agencies Big Business
The 2002 census statistics show that up to 50% of Russian women and men living in Moscow are single and not in a committed relationship. That does not mean that they are not looking. Out of 1,000 Russian women, 175 had never married, 110 were divorced and 180 were widows. Moscow women faired slightly better – 219 women had never married with 101 widows and 106 being divorced. There are 1,147 Russian women for every 1,000 Russian men.On one hand, the average age that many get married at is rising – from 21 to 22 years of age in the early 1990′s to 23-25 years of age in more recent years. The opinion of marriage is changing too, 78% of Muscovites support partnerships without marriage.
One the other hand, lack of available men makes it hard for women to get married. Not only are there fewer men than women, Russian men also have fears that they will not be able to support a family. Women also have these fears, so they end up putting their career first because they want to be able to assure that they can support themselves.
Because of these issues, marriage agencies and dating clubs have been on the rise in Moscow. For busy career oriented single Russian women or men, it is sometimes the best option.
