There’s a new Central Asian restaurant in downtown Moscow and its name comes from a berry which is also using in some of the dishes offered. Barbaris, or barberry, is the name and it is also known as zereshk in dried form.

The restaurant uses zeresk in its regular lamb ploy and in the vegetarian play with the lamb dish going for 350 rubles, the vegetarian at 270 a plate. The berry is also found in a the tea selection, a pot of barberry tea goes for 200 rubles; the cocktail selection, which offers a hat barberry gluhwein for 360 rubles and even the hookah menu includes it in name if not in actual contents.

There are a large number of Uzbek dishes on the menu as well as some Tajik selections. Some of the more interesting Tajik items include the tushbera lamb dumplings with mint which are offered for 310 rubles served in bouillon for an additional 275 rubles. If you are brave, you can sample the khash tongue and tripe soup with Tajik beans for 280 rubles.

Along with grilled dishes and samsa, you can also get wine from 220 rubles a glass and draft beers for 225 rubles a half liter. Barbaris is located at 40/3 2nd Tverskaya-Yamskaya Ul. and is open from 9am-11pm.

If you are in the Moscow area, visiting beautiful Russian women perhaps, there is a village and area to the southeast of the city named Gzhel that could make for a good day trip for some sightseeing.

Usually the word “Gzhel” brings to mind the blue and white painted pottery which is a popular Russian souvenir. “Gzhel” is associated with pottery dating back to the 14^th century. The more common blue and white style only came about in the 1950s due to economic reasons.

There are many lines of “Gzhel” style pottery being produced near the village of Novokharitonovo which is a short day trip from Moscow. Not only can you buy some of the pottery there, but you can also learn more about the history and development of the trade.

The workshop has a salon which sells tiny saucers and large wall clocks. You can also browse the catalogs for fireplace tiles and Chekhov collectibles. You can pick up items cheaper than in Moscow and with less risk of buying counterfeits.

You can take Museum and production tours, which are offered daily at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. The cost is 500 rubles per person for foreigners and 200 rubles for Russians. There is also a five-hour package including a tour, master class and lunch. The cost for that is 700 rubles for Russians and 2,000 rubles for foreigners. Whistler and Russia

Many people do not know that the American artist James Abbot McNeill Whistler spent part of his early life in Russia. His father played a role in the design of the St. Petersburg-Moscow railroad, so at the age of 9, Whistler was sent to study at the St. Petersburg Imperial Academy of Arts.

You can see the influence that the early Russian training had on him at the “Whistler in Russia” exhibition that is currently showing at the Old Tretyakov Gallery from Dec. 6-Feb. 15. The Gallery is showing his works along those of his Russian contemporaries, thus illustrating the Russian influence on his art. Whistler himself considered the country to be the birthplace of his talent and even claimed Russia as his birthplace during the Ruskin libel trial.

The exhibition features paintings, sketches and etchings from different periods in Whistler’s life. They are from 20 different American, Russian and British museums. They will be shown alongside some outstanding Russian artists like Karl Briullov, who was known for his work that bridged the gap from Neo-Classicism to Romanticism and Ilya Repin, the Social Realist artist. Additionally the exhibit features the landscape painter Vasily Polenov, a landscape painter and the impressionist Konstantin Korovin.

Art exhibits and museums are excellent choices for a date if you are looking for opportunities to take out a beautiful Russian girl or maybe meet some real Russian women in the Moscow area.
