There’s a new sport in St. Petersburg that Russian women and men are playing together and it’s called Ultimate Frisbee. Ultimate, a sport that borrows from both soccer and American football and uses a Frisbee as the way to score, is a non-contact sport that provides a strenuous cardio workout. It attracts both men and women to play on co-ed 7 player teams in a friendly environment in cites like St Petersburg, Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod and Velikv Novgorod.

The game is played in local parks in St. Petersburg. You’ll see teams with names like Dogma, JuPiter and Flying Steps and hear terms like layout, Huck and Hammer. Out of the almost 20 teams throughout Russia, 5 teams are in St. Petersburg. Those consist of four open teams that are mixed men and women and one women’s team. There are approximately 150 players in the city alone.

Competition takes the local teams on many a journey through Northwest Russia and the Baltic States as well as Europe to attend championships. The Russian Women’s team will be participating in England to compete in the European Championships.

The sport is comprised of participates of wide ranging athletic background, from the beginner to those that play two or three times a week. It’s the newest way to meet your peers and get fit at the same time.

International Film Festival Comes to Moscow

The 29th Moscow International Film Festival opened on June 22nd and will run through June 30th and offers many opportunities to see some international film fare.

There are 20 films in the main competition program, two which have already been viewed in the international circuit. One of those is German Dani Levy’s film about Hitler controversial “My Führer — Truly the Truest Truth About Adolf Hitler”, the other is a French historical drama by Laurent Tirard “Moliere”.

There are also new films including three Russian films and a good number of films with a Russian or Soviet flair. Larisa Sadilova’s “Nothing Personal” is in the main competition as is “Traveling with Pets” by filmmaker Vera Storozheva – both Russian women filmmakers. The third Russian film in the competition is “Putina” by the late Valery Ogorodnikov. Although he did not live to completely finish the film it was completed on a technical level by producer Vladlen Arsenyev.

The competition also features a film from Georgia, “Russian Triangle” by Aleko Tsabadze which is about lives broken by the war in Chechnya and stars Konstantin Khabensky. There is also some Ukrainian flavor in the mix with “At the River” by Eva Neymann as well as a Ukrainian theme in the Italian film “The Unknown Woman.”

Moscow Cat Theater May Be Forced To Close the Doors

The Moscow Cat Theater, an unique Moscow tradition which is world renown, may be shut down soon according to a theater spokeswoman named Irina Vasilchikova. Show says that the Economic Crimes Department has been coming in and stopping shows while demanding to speak to the founder of the theater and it’s chief performer, Yuri Kuklachev backstage.

The UBEP officers searched the safe in the make-up room and then proceeded to accuse Kuklachev of stealing money based in the fact that the ticket sales for the event were 20, but the theater was full. Not only that, but the officers copied the accounts of the theater without his permission while the ownership papers for the building mysteriously disappeared.

Kuklachev says that the audience that day were mostly children from a children’s home who got in for free. He does not want to lose the theater to the State, who e feels wants him out of the building so they can tear it down and take advantage of the real estate value of the space.

Kuklachev began the theater company in 1976 and it has grown to a size of 120 cats who perform on stage with humans in shows like The Nutcracker and Cats From Outer Space.

Moscow Women and Men Fight for Their Right to Bike

A number of brave Moscow bikers are standing up for their rights to peddle safely through the streets. More and more Moscow women and men are taking up biking as a way to get around the city and are clamoring for bike paths and more safety precautions for bicyclists.

There have not been statistics kept in regards to accidents in the city that involve cyclists, a city traffic police spokesperson stated that the frequency of those types of accidents is increasing. There is at least one accident a day in the city involving a car hitting a bicycle rider.

The biker organization Moscow Without Cars estimates that there are up to 4 million bikes in the city, but their owners are not able to use them because of a lack of biking infrastructure. The only bike paths in the city are in parks or recreation areas and are completely unsuitable for transportation purposes. The organization feels that bikers in Moscow have no rights at all.

The city feels that big cities, such as Moscow, are not suitable for bicycle transportation because of the long distances of travel involved and the cold temperatures in winter.
That is not stopping a large number of bikers in the city from getting together every month to ride down city streets trying to create a critical mass of bikers that will be hard to ignore.

Heat Returns Along With Opportunity to See Giant Tortoises

The city of Moscow has cooled down some since the record-breaking heat in May. In May 2007 was the hottest May in history with temperatures rising above 30 degrees on several occasions. There were five high temperature records set between May 23 and May 30. The highest temperature was reached on May 28^th when the thermometer reached 33.2 degrees.

While some Moscow women and men have found the heat to be enjoyable and have used the opportunity to take some swims to cool off in the Moscow River and lakes in the area, others found the heat to be unbearable and were happy to see the temperatures fall in the early part of June. Unfortunately, temperatures are on the rise again.

The Moscow Zoo is taking the precaution of moving their giant tortoises into open-air enclosures to help keep them cooled down. The tortoises include the Galapagos Tortoises, the Seychelles Tortoises and Leopard Tortoises according to a zoo spokesperson. The Seychelles Tortoise is a very rare breed and is on the list of species that is on the brink of extinction according to Russia’s “Red Book”. The zoo plans to keep the tortoise’s outdoors until the early part of the month in September.

Suzuki Plant Offers Employment Opportunities for St. Petersburg Women and Men

Suzuki Motor Corporation has made an agreement to spend $115 million on construction of a plant in St. Petersburg. The plant will produce the Grand Vitara and SX4 models. The deal will be part of a joint venture between Suzuki and the Itochu Corporation.

One of the factors that led to the decision was that the company has already met the goal it set for automobile sales in Russia in the first five months of the year. The factory will end up employing 500 people and the plans are to start production in late 2009 with an initial output of 30,000 cars per year.

Suzuki officials say that the proximity of St. Petersburg to Europe and a pre-existing automobile manufacturing industry were the main reasons the decision was made to set up shop in the area. Construction on the plant will start in early 2008.

The other car companies that are either building cars in St. Petersburg or plan to in the future include Toyota, General Motors and Nissan. Discussions are also underway with Hyundai and PSA Peugeot. In addition, close to 30 Japanese companies are currently located in St. Petersburg and a Japanese government business lobby, Jetro, is opening a branch in the city next month. Which all means more employment for St. Petersburg women and men.

World’s Symphony Orchestras Converge on Moscow for 10 Days

The 2nd annual Festival of the World’s Symphony Orchestras began Friday, June 1st, in Moscow. While the Vienna Philharmonis Orchestra will not be among the orchestras performing at the Kolonny Zal of the House of Unions, there is still a very impressive slate of conductors and orchestras on hand.

Friday night saw the Orchestre National de France from Paris perform to open up the festival, led by the distinguished Italian Riccardo Muti. They performed Franz Schubert’s final two Symphonies; No. 8, the “Unfinished and No. 9, the “Great C Major”.

On June 5th, Russian women and men can hear the performance of the Dresdner Phillharmonie as they perform the music of Richard Wagner and Ludwig van Beethoven.
Led by maestro Rafael Fruehbeck de Burgos the concert will take place 40 days after the death of the cellist and conductor Mstislav Rostropovich so it will broadcast live on radio and television in his honor.

A group from Rome will be featured June 7th. The Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia will be conducted by its artistic director, Antonio Pappano. They will perform music by Hector Berlioz, Peter Tchaikovsky and 20th-century Italian composer Ottorino Respighi.

Although Russia is behind most developed countries in terms of internet development, the investment opportunities in St. Petersburg are big. That is the news from the 2^nd annual St. Petersburg Internet Conference that was held recently. The conference was put together by the Moscow Regional Public Center of Internet Technologies (ROCIT) and the companies 1C-BITRIX and TRINET to give a platform to present a number of ways to take advantage of the backward Russian internet market.

St. Petersburg is two to three years behind Moscow in regards to internet development compared to other regions of the country which are three to four years behind. Add to that the fact that Moscow is three to four years behind the average of the developed world – that is a serious lag that demands attention.

But that doesn’t mean all doom and gloom. According to the Committee for State Statistics the number of internet users is expected to increase by three million this year to add to the 26 million users registered in Russia in 2007. There are around 700,000 .ru domain names so far in 2007. Advertising on the internet is also increasing, up 87 percent from last year and brings in $187 million, but it still lags behind traditional media.

One aspect addressed by the conference was the attractiveness of the St. Petersburg market because of the niches, little competition and the low cost of project start up. That combined with a projected 10-fold growth in the internet market makes St. Petersburg an attractive place for internet investment.

Visit Rostov for a Look Back at Medieval Russian Times

Rostov the Great (not to be confused with Rostov-upon-Don) acquired its name over 900 years ago in the days when Moscow was just a tiny wooden fortress. The current population of the city is 37,000.

Rostov is located on Lake Nero on the northern border of the Opolye district, a key area for agriculture. It was a large town that was eventually named the capital of its surrounding regions and contributed to the rise of other Central Russian cities like Yaroslavl, Belozersk and Kostroma.

If you visit Rostov, you will want to make sure to visit the kremlin and the monasteries that surround it. The structures represent the typical Russian towns of the 15^th and 17^th centuries. The cathedral of the Metropolitan remained in Rostov to become the center of the Orthodox Church in North-Eastern Russia.

Today the town of Rostov is not as well off as it once was. Many Rostov women and men are not well off financially. The main economy is tourism and state funding. This is a result of the Golden Ring travel route that was established in Russia in the 1960s which gave Rostov museum reserve status.

St. Petersburg Theater Company to Create Second Performance Space

A leading St. Petersburg theater company is turning a gift from President Putin into a performance space. The Bolshoi Drama Theater has unveiled a $35.6 million redevelopment plan for the former Letny Kamennoostrovsky Theater . The unique 19^th century building located

On Kamenny Island was presented to the theater company in October of 2005 by the president.

The renovation will provide for a second performance space for the company which will create more opportunities for St. Petersburg men to take out beautiful St. Petersburg women who are fans of the arts.

The renovation will try to recreate the 1844 theater design and will have 392 seats. The original technical drawings are not available so the interiors may not be 100 percent accurate, but by using inventory lists, the recreation will be as close as possible.

Another challenge in the renovation process was the fact that the 1,200 square meter theater would not be able to hold modern theater equipment and other infrastructural materials. The designers have gotten around those issues by creating a large underground area that doubles the space available.

The theater is expected to be ready by December 2008. Some have speculated that once the renovations are complete, the theater company will move in and make it their permanent home, but the spokesperson for the troupe would neither confirm nor deny that.

There will be a new TV channel in St. Petersburg as of Sunday and it’s going to feature cartoons – adult cartoons that will be marketed towards the “Kidult” market. Kidult is the new buzz word for adults that won’t grow up.

The channel, called 2×2, is going to be broadcast on the Rambler TV frequency. It will feature Beavis & Butthead, The Simpsons, South Park, Japanese anime and some Russian animation classics. The channel will air 24 hours a day.

Who are kidults? They are in their mid-30s and listen to iPods while reading Harry Potter and play Sony PlayStations. They might not be young in age, but they are definitely young in lifestyle.

With a slogan like Switch Off Your Brain, Switch On 2×2.” , there’s a chance the station will become a “background” channel and that’s not a bad thing. About 60% of Russian women and men television viewers watch with one eye on the set, up from 40% in 2002-2003.

Although the title “adult cartoons” may sound suggestive, there are currently no plans to include erotic animation in the program lineup – for the time being at least.

Biennale Contemporary Art Exhibit in Moscow Worth the Visit

If you are looking for something cultural to do with the sexy Russian women in your life, think about checking out the Second Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art which recently opened and will be running for another couple weeks.

This time around, unlike the first event, the exhibit has been embraced by a number of big businesses and the authorities. The exhibit is spread around the city, with a main exhibit and a series of special projects.

The present main project is called “Footnotes on Geopolitics, Market, and Amnesia,” and is not to be missed. The best part of the two part exhibit is outside the city center on the 20^th floor of the unfinished Federation Tower. It features young emerging artists from all around the world. Some of the works include Polish dissident documentary art, the final meal of a Death Row prisoner, neon and felt tip drawings on windows and walls, skateboarding in prison, stripped military power and many more thought-provoking images spread out across three floors.

The second part of the exhibit is called “American Video Art at the Beginning of the 3^rd Millennium” located in the middle of Moscow’s ritzy shopping area at TsUM mall next to the undware from Gucci and Calvin Klein.

The second part of the main exposition – “American Video Art at the Beginning of the 3rd Millennium” – is accommodated in the heart of Moscow’s luxury shopping area, at the TsUM mall, where art is to be consumed, apparently, next to the pants and underwear from Gucci and Calvin Klein.

Also noteworthy is the display of Sots Art, which is the Soviet version of Pop Art being shown at the Tretyakov Gallery. It is definitely worth checking out, especially with a beautiful Russian lady on your arm.

New Style Technology and Soviet Kitsch Makes For Unique St Petersburg Dining Experience

There’s a new name to an old St Petersburg hangout. Propaganda, which was a Soviet themed bar and restaurant known for being the first bar in town to serve good bar sandwiches has opened under new management with a new menu and name.

Lenin@Zhiv is the new name and it now features computers and internet access while maintaining the Soviet era inspired theme. The design includes red volumes of Lenin’s works on shelves which are attached to the wall with large bolts. There is steel everywhere, dusty books, heavy chairs and newspapers. The name is a take off on the old Soviet slogan “Lenin zhiv!” (”Lenin Lives!”).

The bar features Kosogorov samogon (homemade vodka) for 110 rubles. The menu features dished with Soviet themed names like “The Joy of the Communist Leader” or “Komsomolochka”. There is a selection of met, poultry and fish dishes on the menu. One of the more popular options is Borshch Partiiny for 130 rubles, which is a tradition Russian/Ukrainian beetroot soup. The main courses feature items like Bourgeois steak for 350 rubles with a mushroom sauce, French fries and stewed vegetables. There’s also a pork leg for 450 rubles.

If you are on a date with a beautiful St Petersburg woman, make sure you book in advance on the weekends because it can fill up quick.

Lenin @Zhiv is located at 40/68 Naberezhnaya Reki Fontanki and is open 24 hours a day with food being served from 11am to 11pm. All major credit cards are accepted.

Samara Regional Elections Heating Up For Sunday’s Vote

On Sunday 14 Russian regions will hold their parliamentary elections. One of the more heated battles in the elections will take place in Samara between two pro-Kremlin parties – Governor Konstantin Titov’s United Russia and Mayor Viktor Tarkhov’s A Just Russia.

Along the streets of Samara you can see billboards, banners, posters and leaflets promoting the political parties running Sunday. Most of the Samarian women and men living in the city are jaded about the promises being made by all the politicians. Most of the parties are focusing on social issues. A Just Russian has spent a lot of time attacking United Russia with negative ads and filing complaints about media coverage.

A poll from February 21^st of 1,199 Samara region residents shows ruling party United Russia with a large lead of 43% of the vote followed by A Just Russia with 22%. The Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDRP) is third with 13 percent and the Communists are coming in fourth with 10 percent. The other parties running include Union of Right Forces, or SPS, Green Party, and the Patriots of Russia.

There have been some changes to the Samara election laws, one being that voters are not able to vote “against all”. Also, the minimum voter turnout has been abolished.

Deborah Turbeville: Russian Years – 1995-2005 Exhibit To Open In St Petersburg

Friday marks the opening of a new exhibition at The National Center of Photography featuring the work of the American fashion photographer Deborah Turbeville. The internationally acclaimed artist studied with the legendary Richard Avedon. The exhibit will run through March 13^th and is accompanied by lectures and screenings given by Turbeville called “Elements of Style”.

Turbeville applied an original burring approach to commercial images to establish her reputation in the 1970s and 1980s. The technique was unique in that it gave an enigmatic effect to the images used in fashion magazines and advertising campaigns that was a striking contrast to the more tradition clarity of the usual fashion photography of the day. Her works have appeared in such magazines as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar and have been shown in prestigious places like the Sonnabend Gallery in New York City and the Pompidou Center in Paris.

The exhibit features black and white and color images in both large and small formats taken in St Petersburg over the past decade. One series features young female ballet dancers and all feature the eccentric residents of the city. Some have compared the ballet images to those taken by Anastasia Khoroshilova that were shown in the Marble Palace and the State Academy of Choreography in Moscow.

If you are looking for an opportunity to take some beautiful St. Petersburg women out for a cultural evening on the town, this exhibit would be a good choice.

Club Brings Together Foreign Women and St. Petersburg Women

The International Women’s Club in St. Petersburg has been helping acquaint new arrivals for 20 years now and will be celebrating its anniversary at Yusupov Palace on March 10th.

Originally founded when St. Petersburg was still called Leningrad, the non-profit IWC has both international and Russian women as members. Their goal is to welcome English-speaking international women and foster communication with Russians.

Right now there are 140 women from over 50 countries in the club. Most are foreign nationals, but St. Petersburg women are also allowed to join if they are married to foreign men or if they speak English and are sponsored by someone who is a current member. The club’s charter states that Russian women may make up 10 percent of the club.

The IWC helps women get accustomed to St. Petersburg by the production of a resource book called “IWC Tips Book”. It is constantly updated.
