Beautiful Russian Lady Tennis Star Plans to Visit Chernobyl
The stunning and talented Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova is making plans to visit the Chernobyl region where her family is from in her role as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Development Program sometime in the future. The 20 year old was conceived there and the nuclear disaster that devastated the region occurred while her mother was pregnant with her.
According to Sharapova, she was fortunate in that her family was able to escape the crisis by going to stay with family in Siberia. Others were not so lucky including her grandparents who still live in the area.
The trip is still in the planning stages and most likely will not happen until after Wimbledon next July. She plans to visit some of the facilities that are being built in the region right now – hospitals and computer labs for the children of Chernobyl.
She recently won her first tournament of the season in San Diego and was visited by a group of Russian girls and boys that had been brought over to visit the United States by The Children of Chernobyl, an agency that provides opportunities for young ones from the Belarus area that are able to travel.
