Russian women are famed for their beauty, their grace, their loyalty, their family instincts and their pride. Most of this fame is well-deserved. But slowly over the past few years, there has been another quality of Russian women that has fascinated the media, and that is their penchant for foreign men.

At first glance, this interest might seem a little strange, considering that Russian men can often be some of the most attractive in the world. But look closely, and you realize the first and the most basic fact that may be behind this situation: there are only 87 Russian men to 100 Russian women. There are simply not enough men.

The second factor could be the long and ancient tradition of patriarchy that has ruled Russia for centuries. Women in Russia have been used to being treated with indifference by their men, if not with downright unconcern. On the other hand, Western men generally treat women as equals, and this attitude comes across as a refreshing change to Russian girls looking for marriage.

The second factor extends into another. Russian women have a cultural leaning towards the family and the rearing of children, and even women with careers of their own want to ensure that they have a lasting marriage to bring up their children well. A Russian man usually likes to party hard, which is not conducive to a peaceful family life, hence women in Russia have started to look beyond the borders for men who prioritize home and hearth.

These women are a great match for those men from the West seeking nurturing wives who would not look out of place in their respective countries. The home-loving Russian women with their European looks, blonde locks and golden complexion are a perfect fit for such European and American men. The Western man finds himself a caring wife, and the Russian woman gets a loving, liberal and generous husband.

Besides this obvious match of mutual needs, there are some Russian women who want to marry abroad in order to live a new life, to experience a new culture and its customs and traditions. Some of them would like to go to the United States for its liberal, open attitude, and opportunities for growth. Others would like Italy or Spain, because they feel that the men in these countries are more emotional and giving, not to mention more romantic. Yet others would like Sweden, Belgium or Austria, because these countries have a climate similar to Russia, are not too far away from their motherland and yet have men who are more willing to take up family responsibilities.

But the underlying reason beneath all these factors is the desire of Russian women to marry a man who would cherish them, who would want to have children and to take care of their family. Even those women who like the sense of adventure that leaving their country and venturing to settle into another is likely to bring, are primarily looking for love. Women in Russia are extremely susceptible to matters of the heart, and it is to satisfy these cravings of the heart that they are willing to marry foreign men in preference to their own.

The Russian runner Yekaterina Volkova was the winner of the women’s 3,000 meter steeplechase event Monday at the World Athletic Championships. She was the 2nd place finisher in 2005 and won this year with a time of nine minutes and 6.57 seconds – a new World Championships record.

Fellow Russian, Tatyana Petrova got second with a time of 9 minutes, 9.19 seconds while Eunice Jepkorir from Kenya finished third in 9 minutes, 20.09 seconds.

The current World record holder in the women’s 3,000 meter steeplechase, Russian Gulnara Samitova-Galkina, came in 7th with a time of nine minutes 30.24 seconds, well off her 2004 record setting mark of nine minutes, 1.59 seconds.

Not only is Volkova a world champion runner, she is also a dedicated Russian wife and mother. She sad she won the race for her son Daniel, who is three years old. She hopes to set the world record in the event soon.

It was just a couple of years ago that this event became an official one at the World Championships. The winner of the 2005 3000m steeplechase, Dorcus Inzkuru from Uganda, did not enter the event this year.

The Czech Republic has been asked by Russian officials to hold off on a decision to host part of a United States missile defense shield system. Yuri Baluyevsky, the Russian military chief of staff, told Czech officials that it would be better to wait on a decision until after the next US presidential elections, saying, “It will be a big mistake by the Czech government to put this radar site on Czech territory.”

Russia sees the system as a security threat while the Americans maintain it will help control the increasing threat of terrorist attacks. It is also the latest in the move towards embracing NATO by many former Warsaw Pact countries. It is easy to see how the increased military presence by the West makes Russia officials nervous. The Russians insist that the Czech move is more about politics than military might and find it very disappointing that they continue to agree to the construction of the radar systems in the Czech Republic.

Czech officials say they have not made an official decision yet, but had no other statements on the matter. The comments were made on the 39th anniversary of the “Prague Spring” invasion.

Spartak Moscow women’s basketball team has a new American coach, the former women’s coach at LSU, Pokey Chatman. She will be moving to Moscow in October to begin her 6 month stay in Russia.

She will be coaching in a league that features many WNBA stars that come here in the off-season for more money than they make in the United States. One of her former players, Seimone Augustus, as well as University of Connecticut standouts Diana Taurasi and Sue Bird play and it was that talent level that helped Chatman make the decision to tough out the rough Russian winters to take on the job.

She left LSU after coaching the Lady Tigers to three straight Final Four appearances due to accusations that she had behaved improperly with former players. She has been made another offer recently from a US college, but feels the Spartak Moscow offer is her best opportunity right now to move on from the LSU situation. Spartak Moscow is owned by oligarch Shabtai von Kalmanovic. Chatman has not commented on the salary she will be making, but as the two former Huskies stars make between $500,000 and $3 million a year, it is safe to assume that she will be making more that the $400,000 a year LSU was paying her.

The Russian team had an outstanding performance at the ITU Elite Team Triathlon World Championships in Hungary over this weekend in preparation for the upcoming individual world championships that are scheduled to be held in Hamburg less than three weeks away.

The championships started with the women’s event. Italy was hoping to become the first country to win two years in a row and got off to a quick start in the opening leg of the event. But the Russian and Ukrainian teams came up in quick pursuit. Russian Elena Matveeva had the quickest run-split of the day to give an insurmountable lead to the anchor, Anastasia Yatsenko to secure the gold medal with a winning time of 1 hour, 5 minutes and 5 seconds to finish 16 seconds ahead of the Ukraine team.

On the men’s side, most expected the Spanish team to dominate, with German also having a strong shot at the title. However, Russian star Alexander Brukhankov, a two time world cup finisher this year, took off in the final leg and captured the championship for Russian with a time of 58 minutes, 18 seconds.

This is the second time a country has won gold in both the women and men’s events. In 2003 Australia was the first country to do so.
