Thomas Hampson, the renowned American baritone made his Russian debut on Tuesday. He appeared at the Mariinsky Theater in its new state-of-the-art concert hall and performed a program of Liszt, Mahler and American songs.

Hampson, who was born in Indiana and studied music at Eastern Washington University, Cheney and Fort Wright Spokane, says that Leonard Bernstein was a direct influence on his development as an interpreter of the works of Gustav Mahler. Hampson enjoys Mahler’s love of poetry.

His repertoire includes the title roles of “Don Giovanni,” “The Barber of Seville,” “William Tell,” “Macbeth” and “Eugene Onegin.” Hampson is associated with a number of Opera houses, most notably the Zurich Opera, New York’s Metropolitan Opera, the OpIra National de Paris, the Vienna State Opera, the San Francisco Opera and the Royal Opera House Covent Garden. Hampson looks at his first Russian appearance as a opportunity to extend his artistic and professional development.

Hampson tries to pick songs that he thinks his audience wants to hear, understand and appreciate. He has traveled most of the globe putting on the type of performances that single Russian women and their dates got the chance to see in St. Petersburg Tuesday night.
