Russian brides wedding expectations
When preparing for your wedding with a Russian woman, be prepared to face slightly different wedding expectations of Russian brides. Unlike local American tradition, in Russia weddings are not planned 1 year in advance. They tend to be more spontaneous and generally occur at a shorter notice.
Russian wedding - a standard pattern
Russian weddings usually follow a very standard pattern. Most close friends and relatives accompany the bride and groom to a local "ZAGS" - which is a government authority that keeps a registrar of all marriages and makes your relationship official. You have to file an application 1-2 months prior to the appointment date. On the date of appointment, a government worker would make a standard speech and request both the bride and the groom to consent to marriage. When this is done, the husband and wife exchange engagement rings (which should more properly be called marriage rings) and their passports are stamped to signify they are married.
In America when you intend to marry a woman, you propose and secure that proposal with the exchange of an engagement ring. In Russia, engagement rings are not very common. It either has to be marriage or nothing at all! In Russia, you propose to marry, not to engage.
After the official ceremony it is common to go around various local places of interest such as churches, city parks, etc. The couple is accompanied by close relatives and friends, as well as a professional photographer who would make those unforgettable wedding photos.
The wedding celebration
In America, preparation for the wedding usually takes a long time and has to be planned in advance.
However, Russian brides are often swept away in a ceremony that is coordinated rather quickly. Russian brides can be proposed to in one month and married the next.
For a wedding celebration it is common to book a large restaurant, often inside a major local hotel. The facility usually provides everything that is required: the food, cooks, and the host, who oversees the whole wedding celebration typically in a very standard way.
In US the actual wedding ceremony may last 30 minutes or so, excluding the reception. The event may be filled with both friends and family. Russian brides have ceremonies that last 2-3 days. ALL relatives are usually present at the ceremony, which is a good opportunity to see your whole family, from the most distant parts of Russia. Everybody eats and drinks until very late at night. The tables are rarely emptied, instead more and more food is brought in to symbolize wealth for the family. It is very common to continue the celebration for at least 1-2 days.
