If you haven’t tried one of these voice via Internet services lately, then you should. Here’s a breakdown of one of the better known services, Skype, which is owned by Ebay.

Skype is free if the person you call has also downloaded Skype. In this way, it’s a lot like glorified chatting on some sort of old fashioned instant messaging service. You’re online; they’re online. They use Skype; you use Skype. It’s all free. (As long as you have a headset with a microphone or a similar setup. Check out this story for more info.)

Or, with SkpeOut, you can call any landline or cellphone of someone who doesn’t have or isn’t using Skype at the time. Including all charges, the cost per minute is 4.4 cents for Russia in general, 5.6 cents for a Russian mobile phone, 2.4 cents for Moscow, and 2.1 cents for St. Petersburg. (Note on this: You have to buy credit, and you have to use it or lose it in 90 days. So be sure to buy in moderation.) PrivatePhone.com is one of the biggest services offering free voice mail. You can sign up at their site (no commitments, no credit cards) and receive up to 10 voicemails that you can listen to from your cell phone or from your computer. You can pick from their numbers a local or otherwise area code, which can really enable a greater level of privacy if that’s a concern for you.

One of the cool features of PrivatePhone.com is that you can post a voicemail to a Web site, like a blog or Myspace, which can give you the opportunity to show off your new dating interest to all your friends.
