Amidst all the debate about immigration here in the United States, the media has trotted out some sob stories about couples who wed only to see their relationship crumble. Pressures from family back home, the attempt to make both cultures work at the same time, unrealistic expectations. Some of these news stories make these marriages look like Greek tragedies. But is there truth to these stories? Well, for marriages made on sites like this one: the answer is a resounding NO!

According to the United States Immigration service, these marriages made through services like offered on LoversPlanet.com, “have a lower divorce rate than the nation as a whole.” Compared to about 50 percent for regular American-American relationships, more than 80 percent of the types of relationships being formed here, now have lasted during the time the bureau studied them. Anywhere between four to six thousand men and women will meet up with that perfect somebody every year.

Here’s how these relationships are different from those sob stories on the news: The U.S. immigration service offers what’s called a K-1 Visa (also known as the “fiancée visa”). It may sound like a credit card offer, but it’s actually a new way to make the process of bringing your fiancée here. Established in 2000, the process involves filing an application and an interview at a consulate’s office, among other things. More information is available by clicking here. And the wait? Usually about five to six months. Compared to the way the process used to work, this is a huge improvement and a huge opportunity.

For a step-by-step guide on the process, try this site. It has an easy and readable flow chart that will walk you through the process.

But, if you’re eager to visit now and to make sure the relationship works, visitor visas are much easier to obtain. Check back in to this site for more information!
