Flying to Russia
Air Travel, Destinations, Bookings, and Other Important Information
Flying to Russia is only getting easier, with more travel companies and more airlines offering package deals and arranging flight schedules to major and lesser cities around the country. Whether you're traveling to Russia for business or pleasure, you don't need to worry about how you're going to get there.
So where do you want to go? Moscow? Or perhaps Novosibirsk for a quiet get-away in Siberia?
Many airlines offer direct flights to Moscow, St Petersburg, and Kiev, which might be described as the three major cities as far as travel goes. If you do want to go to Novosibirsk, then your most direct route is likely to involve a connection at Moscow's International Airport. The air travel time from Moscow to Novosibirsk is about four hours. If you travel east to Vladivostok, your air travel time from Moscow is nine hours.
Standard Pricing and Budget Deals
As with most destinations, prices to Russia vary throughout the year and are usually higher than average in season. From the United States a return flight to Moscow ranges from about $500 to $1,000 depending on your departure zone. From New York to Moscow averages between $500 and $750 whilst flights from Los Angeles to Moscow run from about $600 to $1,000. All prices quoted include estimates for tax.
To save money, the best airlines to go through are Delta, Finnair, AirFrance, KLM, Lufthansa, and Russia's own Aeroflot.
It's also useful to know that return flights from London to Moscow range from about $300 to $500 dollars, and that, out of season, starting towards the end of October, RyanAir and EasyJet offer special budget flights from London to Riga or Tallinn, from where you can connect to a bus or train bound for Moscow or St Petersburg. If you decide to fly from London, the best airlines are Lufthansa, AirItalia, AirFrance, SAS, and Aeroflot.
Making A Booking
When you're ready it's best to use a local travel agent - one you trust - even if you're tempted to 'do-it-yourself'. Travel agents and travel companies can certainly arrange your trip (travel, accommodation, and visas) far easier than you.
Keep in mind that the cheapest tickets are usually available through Russia's home-grown airline, Aeroflot. Despite the sometimes negative image, Aeroflot actually offers excellent service. More information is available through the links below.
