Looking for something to do in February, either alone, or with a beautiful Russian woman or even your Russian Bride? There are some music and dance productions in Moscow which will make for a great night out with that special someone.

The Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Center will be performing a classic opera, Georges Bizet’s “Carmen.”. The young singers in the company have done good performances of Charles Gounod’s “Faust” and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s “The Tsar’s Bride” in the past, so “Carmen” should also be worth seeing.

Speaking of “The Tsar’s Bride,” conductor Vladimir Fedoseyev will be leading a semi-staged concert version of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s masterpiece.

Bolshoi Theater will premiere three one-act ballets from America in February. Starting with St. Petersburg-native George Balanchine’s “Serenade,” a classic which is set to the music of Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for String Orchestra and was first performed in 1935. That will be followed by “In the Upper Room,” by American choreographer Twyla Tharp, written in 1986 who had a long association with long associated dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov and the American Ballet Theater. The finale will be a trio of performances will be by British-born Christopher Wheeldon. The ballet is so new it does not have a title yet and is set to the music of Benjamin Britten.

You can hear Mahler’s “Resurrection Symphony” early in the month, with the National Philharmonic of Russia conducted by by Teodor Curentzis. The Russian National Orchestra will make its first Moscow appearances of 2007 in February. They will be presenting an all-Franz Liszt program conducted by its founder and music director, Mikhail Pletnev. The performance will feature featuring Denis Matsuyev as piano soloist, who was the Tchaikovsky Competition winner in 1988 .
