About Rostov, Russia
The town of Rostov is better known as Rostov Veliky or Rostov the Great. The longer title is used to distinguish this important tourist center from the city, Rostov-on-Don.
While Rostov-on-Don is the administrative center of one of the small states or oblast in the south of Russia, Rostov Veliky is one of the oldest towns in Russia and a recognized tourist center of the so called Golden ring.

Like many of Russia's oldest and most impressive towns, Rostov has a number of churches centered around an architecturally stunning Kremlin in the center of the city. A cathedral dedicated to the Assumption sits in Rostov's central square and other major buildings, including the Savior Church-na-Snyakh (1675), the Church of St Gregory (1670), the Church of St John the Apostle (1683), and the Church of the Resurrection of Christ (1670). Inside the Rostov Kremlin stand eleven towers, several belfries, a multitude of palaces, and the baroque Church of Our Lady of Smolensk (1693).
