History of Rostov
First mention of Rostov dates to the year 862, the town of Rostov became the capital of one of the most important Russian principalities in the 13th century. By 1474, Rostov had lost its independency and the town was a part of Muscovy. It remained, however, an important focal center for the Russian Orthodox church; from 988, Rostov was the see of one of the first bishoprics of the Russian Orthodox church.
Loosing its prominence, Rostov endured several attacks over the centuries. The town was devastated by the Mongols during the 13th and 14th centuries and it was attacked by a Polish army in 1608.
