About Kazan, Russia
Kazan is a capital of the Republic of Tatarstan and has a population of over 1.1 million. A major city in central European Russia, Kazan is also a port situated at the confluence of Volga and Kazanka rivers which makes it a major industrial and commercial center.
City of Kazan
In the past Kazan was a prominent Muslim city and a center of culture of the Tatars. It is also a city where Leo Tolstoy and Vladimir Ilich Lenin studied. The city was founded in the late 14th century and soon became the capital of a powerful Tatar Khanate.
In 16th century the city was annexed by Ivan IV Vasilyevich. It was mostly destroyed in 1774 during a revolt by troops under the leadership of the Cossack soldier Yemelyan Pugachev, but was rebuilt shortly after by Catherine the Great, who loved this city and called it "The first city in Russia after Moscow".
